A bigger kitchen without losing the garden

The brief

The owners wanted one room where the family could cook, eat and keep an eye on the children in the garden, without the extension looking tacked on to their 1930s semi.

The challenge

A shared drain ran right through the footprint, and the original brick was no longer made. The family also needed a working kitchen for as much of the build as possible.

How we did it

We agreed a drain diversion with Anglian Water before starting, sourced reclaimed brick to match, and built the shell before breaking through so the old kitchen stayed in use for nine of the fourteen weeks.

The outcome

A bright, open room with a full-width view of the garden, finished to the agreed price. From the road you'd struggle to tell where the old house ends.
